PhD Program in Law

The PhD program in Law is a compulsory program for all PhD students at the Faculty of Law. This special program ensures that all PhD students acquire in-depth knowledge during their research.

Program Structure

The regular education program starts every year in September and runs until the beginning of summer. There is an intensive course with weekly seminars of 3 hours, followed by a number of smaller modules. In June, the annual PhD Workshop takes place where first-year PhD students present their research and receive feedback from other researchers within the law faculty.

Training for External PhD Students

For external PhD students who do not participate in the regular education program, the training has a different form. The faculty provides (online) training and materials on research methods, academic skills, and discussion of the framework used at the UvA regarding scientific integrity. External PhD students are also given the opportunity to present their research and receive feedback from other legal researchers. External PhD students are considered full members of the faculty's research community.

Admission and Enrollment

PhD students are strongly advised to follow the education program in the first or second year of the PhD trajectory, so that they can use the knowledge acquired during the PhD trajectory as well as possible.
