Introduction to the PhD Programme
The PhD programme at the ILLC is designed to provide students with a comprehensive education in research, preparing them for a career in academia or industry. The programme is characterized by its emphasis on transferable skills, a well-structured curriculum, and the opportunity to work on a joint PhD project with the University of St Andrews.
Admission Requirements
To be eligible for the PhD programme, applicants must have a degree equivalent to a Dutch Master's degree, with research experience typically acquired by writing an MA or MSc research thesis. The admission requirements include:
- A master degree in a relevant discipline
- Academic excellence
- Research experience
- Research interests matching the research pursued at ILLC
- English language proficiency
- An ILLC senior staff member willing to supervise the PhD project
Applying to the PhD Programme
There are two ways to become a PhD candidate at the ILLC:
- By being selected for a funded position advertised by the ILLC, which includes:
- Positions funded externally by the NWO, the EU, or other organisations
- Positions funded by direct UvA funding
- By applying directly to the ILLC PhD programme with secured funding via an international programme or scholarship, or with private funding
Application Procedure
The application procedure for the PhD programme involves:
- Filling out the online application form
- A positive evaluation of the application, which may include an online interview
- Receiving a definitive decision regarding admission within six weeks of the application
- Drawing up a report and submitting it at nine months, followed by an assessment interview at 12 months
Non-EU Applicants
Non-EU applicants must apply for a work permit, which is generally not a problem if they are employed. However, non-employed PhD candidates must prove that they have a certain minimum amount of money available, currently around € 1,572 per month for a single person.
