Program Overview

The Master's program in Leraar Voorbereidend Hoger Onderwijs in de Bètawetenschappen (Teaching in Pre-University Education in the Beta Sciences) is designed to train students to become first-grade teachers in secondary education. The program is offered by the University of Amsterdam and is available in both full-time and part-time formats.

Program Structure

The program consists of two main components:

• Vakken op de UvA (Courses at the UvA): Students attend various courses at the University of Amsterdam, focusing on educational and pedagogical topics such as classroom management, test development, and the cognitive and socio-emotional development of adolescents.
• Praktijkdeel (Stage or Job at School): The practical component of the program takes place at a secondary school, where students teach at least 100 hours of self-contained lessons (with half in the lower levels of pre-vocational secondary education, senior general secondary education, or pre-university education, and the other half in the upper levels of senior general secondary education or pre-university education).

Educatieve Module

It is also possible to follow the Educatieve Module after completing a Bachelor's degree, which allows students to earn a second-grade teaching certification. If students later decide to pursue the full Master's program in Leraar Voorbereidend Hoger Onderwijs in de Bètawetenschappen to obtain a first-grade teaching certification, they will be exempt from the first 30 EC of the program and can complete the remaining 30 EC within six months.
