Program Overview

Program Overview

The Master's program in Teacher Education for Pre-University Education in the Humanities and Social Sciences (Leraar Voorbereidend Hoger Onderwijs in de Mens- en Maatschappijwetenschappen) is designed to train students to become first-grade teachers in secondary education. Upon completion of the program, graduates are qualified to teach at all levels of secondary education, including pre-university education (havo and vwo), senior secondary vocational education (vmbo), vocational education, and adult education.

Program Structure

The program consists of two main components: theoretical courses at the University of Amsterdam (UvA) and a practical component (internship or job) at a secondary school. The theoretical courses cover educational and pedagogical topics, such as classroom management, test development, and cognitive and socio-emotional development of adolescents. The practical component involves teaching at least 100 hours of self-contained lessons at a secondary school.

School Subjects

The program is offered for the following school subjects:

  • Algemene Economie (General Economics)
  • Bedrijfseconomie (Business Economics)
  • Aardrijkskunde (Geography)
  • Geschiedenis en Staatsinrichting (History and Government)
  • Maatschappijleer en Maatschappijwetenschappen (Social Studies and Social Sciences)
  • Kunstgeschiedenis en Culturele en Kunstzinnige Vorming / Kunst Algemeen (Art History and Cultural and Artistic Education / General Art)
  • Filosofie (Philosophy)
  • Godsdienst en Levensbeschouwing (Religion and Philosophy of Life)

Program Details

  • Program Type: Master
  • Study Load: 60 EC
  • Duration: 1 year
  • Language of Instruction: Dutch
  • Program Format: Full-time and part-time, daytime education
  • The program can be completed in either full-time or part-time, with adapted trajectories available for students who already possess a first-grade or second-grade teaching qualification or have completed the minor Education or Educational Module.

Educational Module

It is also possible to follow the Educatieve Module after completing a bachelor's degree, which involves completing the first 30 EC of the master's program and obtaining a second-grade teaching qualification. If students later decide to complete the full master's program to obtain a first-grade teaching qualification, they will receive exemption for the first 30 EC and only need to complete the second part of the program (the in-depth module, 30 EC). In this case, the master's program can be completed within half a year.
