Program Overview

Program Overview

The Bachelor's program in Cognition, Language and Communication offers students a broad, integrated, and multidisciplinary approach to human cognition in relation to language and communication. The program focuses on two main areas:

  • The human language ability as a cognitive function and its relationship with other cognitive functions, such as logical reasoning, memory, 'Theory of Mind', calculation, and music.
  • The human ability to communicate effectively and adequately in various situations and using different means.

Program Structure

The program is strongly research-oriented, with students being introduced to the role of researcher from the first year. The curriculum is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of research methods, data collection, and analysis. The program consists of three years of study, with the following structure:

  • First Year: Students are introduced to the field of cognition, language, and communication, and learn about research methods, data collection, and analysis.
  • Second Year: Students choose a package of courses from another program, such as psychology, psychobiology, artificial intelligence, linguistics, communication science, philosophy, music science, or Dutch language and culture. This provides students with a different perspective and helps them develop an interdisciplinary view of human cognition.
  • Third Year: The third year is largely devoted to bound and unbound electives, allowing students to specialize in their area of interest. Students can also participate in a study abroad program, which is recommended to be planned for the first semester of the third year.

Program Details

The program is characterized by its multidisciplinary approach, with cognitive scientists, linguists, and communication scientists working together to create a curriculum that focuses on research questions related to the human mind and its relationship with language and communication.
