Program Overview

The Psychology: Sport and Performance Psychology program is a master's track offered by the University of Amsterdam. The program is designed to train students to become critically minded professionals who can work in an evidence-based way in the field of sport and performance psychology.

Learning Objectives

After completing this master's track, students can:


  1. Evaluate psychological theories, models, and research findings in the field of sport and performance psychology.
  2. Evaluate complex sport and performance psychological issues in practice using psychological theories and models.
  3. Develop scientifically informed solutions and interventions for complex sport and performance psychological issues in practice.
  4. Evaluate relevant professional skills (e.g., coaching, consulting) to solve problems in the area of sport and performance psychology.
  5. Derive hypotheses (predictions) or research questions (problems) based on scientific literature or theory.
  6. Develop the appropriate research design (including procedures and materials) corresponding to research questions and hypotheses.
  7. Develop a data processing strategy and process appropriate data corresponding to their research questions and hypotheses.
  8. Use the appropriate analysis techniques corresponding to their research questions and hypotheses and correctly interpret the output in light of their research questions and hypotheses.
  9. Write a report (paper) of scientific results adapted to the audience.
  10. Present and discuss scientific results adapted to the audience.
  11. Effectively act according to the different steps of the self-regulation process (goal setting, planning, performing, and evaluating/reflecting) for the benefit of the task performance.
  12. Effectively act according to the various steps of the self-regulation process (goal setting, planning, performing, and evaluating/reflecting) toward the desired field of work or profession.
  13. Effectively act the different steps of the (self-)regulation process (goal setting, planning, performing, and evaluating/reflecting) together with peers for the purpose of a joint activity or outcome.
  14. Effectively act in accordance with the guidelines for scientific integrity, ethical research, and rules of professional conduct required of psychologists (Professional Code of Ethics for Psychologists).

Basic Registration Sport Psychology (BASP)

Students of the sport and performance psychology track can apply for the BASP, which is a certificate issued by the Dutch association of sport psychologists (VSPN). This certificate is awarded to students who have dedicated 30 ECs to sport psychology during their study, and it is a requirement for enrollment in the post-graduate training to become a licensed sport psychologist (POPS).
