Program Overview


Introduction to Honours in Medicine and Health

The Faculty of Medicine and Health offers an opportunity for students to extend their study and explore their research potential through the Honours program. This additional year of study, or up to 18 months in some courses, is available after completing an undergraduate course.

The Honours year in medicine and health provides students with in-depth knowledge of a particular field, allowing them to make a meaningful contribution to it. It also helps develop desirable skills in critical thinking, time management, and communication. An Honours degree can launch a fulfilling career in research and academia and is a common pathway to a PhD.

Available Honours Degrees

The Faculty offers Honours degrees in the following areas:

  • Nursing
  • Pharmacy

Health Sciences

The integrated Honours program in Health Sciences is an 18-month program that runs alongside regular coursework during the last three semesters of the four-year degree. Integrated Honours are available in:


  • Diagnostic radiography
  • Exercise physiology
  • Occupational therapy
  • Physiotherapy
  • Speech pathology

Students will receive an invitation to express their interest during the second semester of their second year.


An additional one-year Honours program is also available through:


  • The Bachelor of Applied Science (Exercise and Sport Science), in the Faculty of Medicine & Health
  • The Health or Human Movement streams within Bachelor of Science (Honours), in the Faculty of Science

Entry into Honours is competitive and based on students' past academic performance. The Honours program commences only in Semester 1 and does not accept mid-semester enrolments.


Medical Sciences

Honours in Medical Sciences is undertaken either within a specific discipline or externally in any associated research institute or clinical school. The project is hosted by the Faculty of Science but led by either the Sydney Medical School or the School of Medical Sciences.


Nursing

The Bachelor of Nursing (Honours) is an additional year of study that students complete after finishing their undergraduate degree. Applications are open to students who have the requisite knowledge and aptitude to undertake the course with a minimum Weighted Average Mark (WAM) of 65.


Pharmacy

The Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours) and Master of Pharmacy Practice, and the Bachelor of Pharmacy and Management (Honours) and Master of Pharmacy Practice, both include integrated Honours programs. The Honours component consists of an independent research project supervised by a member of the academic staff.
