Bachelor of Engineering Honours

Mechanical Engineering stream

Overview

Mechanical engineers are responsible for the design and development of a wide range of machinery and mechanical systems from supersonic fighter jets to everyday products like bicycles and toasters. The Bachelor of Engineering Honours (Mechanical) equips students with the knowledge and skills required to design individual mechanical components, complete machines, complex systems, and integrated mechanical processes.

Throughout the program, students gain a strong foundation in the principles of motion, energy, and force to analyse and optimise mechanical designs. Emphasis is placed on ensuring product safety, performance, and reliability, as well as developing efficient systems and processes that support cost-effective manufacturing.

Graduates can specialise in areas such as:

  • manufacturing
  • automotive engineering
  • transportation
  • HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) Mechanical engineers are employed across a broad range of industries including:
    • aerospace
    • chemical processing
    • computing
    • telecommunications
    • paper production
    • power generation There is also growing demand for mechanical engineers in the environmental, biomedical, and nanotechnology sectors. This degree also serves as a pathway to further study, including eligibility for postgraduate programs at the University of Sydney.
