Speech Pathology Program Details

Introduction

The Speech Pathology program at the University of Sydney is designed to provide students with a comprehensive education in speech pathology, preparing them for a career in this field. The program is offered as a Bachelor of Applied Science (Speech Pathology) and is available in both full-time and part-time attendance patterns.

2 Attendance Pattern

The attendance pattern for these courses is full-time or part-time.


3 Admission to Candidature

Admission to this course is on the basis of a secondary school leaving qualification such as the NSW Higher School Certificate (including national and international equivalents), tertiary study, or an approved preparation program. English language requirements must be met where these are not demonstrated by sufficient qualifications taught in English. Special admission pathways are open for mature-aged applicants who do not possess a school leaving qualification, educationally disadvantaged applicants, and for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Applicants are ranked by merit, and offers for available places are issued according to the ranking.


4 Requirements for Award

To qualify for the award of the pass degree, a candidate must complete 192 credit points of units of study in the order prescribed in the Table, including:


  • 174 credit points of core units
  • 18 credit points of selective units, chosen from the list of selective units in the Table

5 Requirements for the Honours Degree

Honours is available to meritorious students as integrated honours. Students will complete an alternative set of units in the last three semesters of the program. Admission to the Honours program is by permission of the Program Director or relevant delegate after the completion of 96 credit points. Admission is competitive and is based on performance during years 1 and 2 of the course.


6 Credit for Previous Study

The Coursework Policy specifies the general conditions for granting credit for previous study for these courses, except that credit will not be granted for recognised prior learning older than 5 years at the time of first enrolment.


7 Requirements for Students Undertaking Clinical Placements

Students must provide proof they hold an Australian current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certificate prior to attending their placement and that it is valid for the duration of the placement. Students must also have evidence of up-to-date vaccinations and immunisations against certain infectious diseases prior to undertaking clinical placements.


8 Satisfactory Progress

The Faculty will monitor students for satisfactory progress towards the completion of their award course. In addition to the common triggers used to identify students not meeting academic progression requirements, students must pass all Practice Education 1, 2, 3, and 4, and Practice Education Professional Entry A and B units of study.


9 Award of the Degree

The Bachelor of Applied Science (Speech Pathology) is awarded at either Pass or Honours level. The Honours degree is awarded in classes ranging from First Class to Third Class as specified in the Coursework Policy.


10 Transitional Provisions

These resolutions apply to students who commenced their candidature after 1 January 2026. Students who commenced prior to 1 January 2026 should complete the requirements in accordance with the resolutions in force at the time of their commencement.
