Program Overview
PHSI3009: Cell Physiology of Disease
Overview
Understanding the molecular processes taking place inside our cells allows us to appreciate the functions of living cells, explain the molecular basis of diseases, and inspires the development of new treatments. This unit of study provides the opportunity to build on existing understanding of the cellular and molecular basis of how our bodies work, explore what goes wrong if key cell types do not work as expected, and learn about the latest therapies and techniques that link events at the level of the body to the activity of single cells.

Learning Outcomes
At the completion of this unit, students should be able to:
- Develop a deep and integrated knowledge of physiological principles and concepts and their role in the workings of the major systems of the human body
- Develop a broad and coherent body of knowledge of the methods used in the physiological sciences and explain why current disciplinary knowledge is both contestable and testable by further inquiry
- Select and apply practical and theoretical techniques and tools to conduct physiological investigations
- Source, collate, synthesise, and critically evaluate information in physiology from a range of relevant sources
- Communicate concepts and findings in physiology and their implications through a range of modes for a variety of purposes, using evidence-based arguments that are robust to critique
- Develop creative and innovative approaches to problem-solving in the field of physiological research
- Address authentic problems in physiology, working professionally, responsibly, and ethically within collaborative, interdisciplinary teams
Unit Availability
This unit is available in various sessions with different modes of attendance and locations. The unit outline, which includes assessment details and a schedule of weekly activities, is published two weeks before the first day of teaching. Previous outlines can serve as a guide to the details of the unit.
Additional Advice
It is strongly recommended that students take both PHSI3009 and PHSI3010 or PHSI3910 units of study concurrently.
