Program Overview

Bachelor of Education (Primary)

Overview

The Bachelor of Education (Primary) degree is designed to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and dispositions necessary for effective teaching practice. The program includes a range of coursework and practical experiences that prepare students for a career in primary education.

Practical Experience

Professional Experience (practice teaching) is an integral component of the Bachelor of Education (Primary) degree. Students are placed in schools with experienced teachers to observe and engage in classroom activities, developing their knowledge, skills, and dispositions related to teaching practice.

About the Practical Experience

In each year of the degree program, students will participate in professional experience placements, commencing with observation visits to schools in Year 1. These placements are followed by professional experience placements lasting 20-25 days each year, culminating in a 35-day final placement during the final semester of study.

Requirements for Completion

To meet the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers, students are required to complete 80 days of professional experience in schools. Block placements occur in the second, third, and fourth years of the degree, with students undertaking 20 days of professional experience in the second year, 25 days in the third year, and 35 days in the fourth year. Students are assessed against the criteria outlined in the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers and must meet these criteria during their placements.

  • The second year of the degree involves 20 days of professional experience, during which students familiarize themselves with school and student contexts while developing confidence and teaching competencies.
    • Students are paired and work under the guidance of experienced teachers.
  • The third year of the degree involves 25 days of professional experience, with students working more independently under the guidance of their school-based supervising teachers.
    • Students develop their teaching skills and confidence in a supportive environment.
  • The fourth year of the degree involves 35 days of final placements, during which students are responsible for teaching up to 60% of the teacher's workload.
    • Students are assessed against the criteria outlined in the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers and must meet these criteria during their placements.
