Program Overview

University of Cincinnati College of Medicine

The University of Cincinnati College of Medicine offers an integrated 6-year residency program in cardiothoracic surgery.

Program Overview

Our program provides balanced education in all aspects of cardiothoracic surgery, with an emphasis on minimally-invasive procedures. The goal is to develop, train, and mentor the next leaders in cardiac and thoracic surgery.

Program Structure

  • The integrated program (I-6) started in July 2014 and provides 6 years of training after completion of medical school.
  • In collaboration with the Department of Surgery, residents rotate through general surgery, surgical oncology, vascular surgery, transplant surgery, pediatric surgery, critical care, trauma surgery, cardiac surgery, thoracic surgery, and congenital cardiac surgery during the first three years of the program to establish strong fundamentals of surgical practice.
  • During the last three years, residents are educated in all aspects of cardiothoracic surgery, including adult cardiac surgery, general thoracic surgery, and congenital cardiac surgery, resulting in well-rounded and independent thoracic surgeons.
  • Additionally, our trainees have dedicated rotations in echocardiography, cardiac catheterization, interventional pulmonary, and cardiothoracic critical care.

Program Administration

  • Program Director: Robert Van Haren, MD
  • Program Coordinator: Tonya Esterkamp

Admission

Applicants for our ACGME-accredited advanced training programs in cardiothoracic surgery are selected through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP).
