Program Overview


University of Cincinnati College of Medicine

The University of Cincinnati College of Medicine has a long and rich tradition in teaching, research, and service. The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of Cincinnati seeks to create and support an environment where discovery, inquiry, and learning are encouraged.


Pathology Residency Program

The Pathology Residency Program at the University of Cincinnati aims to educate residents to become competent in the field of anatomic and clinical pathology, enabling them to practice where they choose. The program offers the experience of clinical services and consultations in an academic setting, interspersed with external rotations to expose residents to the variety of practice that a career in pathology offers.


Program Goals

The program promotes excellence through teaching and practice in accordance with the ACGME approved guidelines, leading to board eligibility. It teaches relevant, meaningful, and well-defined up-to-date clinical science as it applies to current trends in patient care.

The curriculum includes:


  • Autopsy
  • Blood Banking & Transfusion Medicine (BBTM)
  • Clinical Microbiology Rotation
  • Cytopathology
  • Dermatopathology
  • Diagnostic Laboratory Management (DLM)
  • Forensic Pathology
  • Hematopathology
  • Neuropathology
  • Orientation month and Grossing only
  • Surgical Pathology
  • Pediatric Pathology at CCHMC
  • Surgical Pathology at VAMC

Program Structure

The program is customizable to the interests of residents, with six blocks of electives. It also seeks to support residents as people and provides many opportunities for feedback and resident involvement in program leadership.


Outcomes

The program has a 96% AP/CP board pass rate over the last 6 years, and its trainees go on to top fellowships, ultimately securing the jobs of their choosing.
