The University of Cincinnati College of Medicine offers various programs, including the Pediatric Surgery Fellowship.
Pediatric Surgery Fellowship
The division of Pediatric Surgery offers a two-year fellowship in Pediatric Surgery. One new resident is chosen each year through the National Resident Matching Program. To date, over 50 Pediatric Surgery Residents have been trained in the division. The Pediatric Surgery Residency at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital is one of the more renowned programs in the United States.
Program Details
During the training period, the resident assumes graded responsibility and is exposed to the entire spectrum of pediatric surgery, including:
- Trauma
- Neonatal surgery
- Transplantation
- Bariatric surgery
- Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation
- Fetal intervention
- Advanced anorectal reconstruction
The Division of Pediatric Surgery includes 19 full-time pediatric surgeons, 6 PhD researchers, 16 nurse practitioners, general surgery residents from three different programs in Cincinnati, and medical students. The operating room is one of the busiest in the country with over 35,000 cases performed annually. The emergency department evaluates over 100,000 patients each year. Each resident completes approximately 1,100 pediatric surgery cases during their residency.
Subspecialty Fellowship Program
The division offers year-long advanced training experiences in:
- Trauma/Critical Care
- Fetal Surgery
- Colorectal Surgery
- Vascular Malformations/Oncology
- Basic Science Research
Master's Degree Programs
The University of Cincinnati offers the following Master’s degree programs, which can be completed concurrently with the fellowship:
- Master of Science in Clinical Research, including two optional focus areas:
- Clinical Epidemiology/Clinical Effectiveness
- Clinical Trials
- Master of Education for Physicians and Other Health Care Professionals
- Master of Public Health
International Fellow and ECMO Training
The division also offers a two-year experience for an International Fellow as well as a one or two-year training experience in Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO).

Application Process
Applications for the ACGME-accredited residency/fellowship in pediatric surgery at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center can be submitted through the Electronic Residency Application Services (ERAS) website. The completed application must be received no later than December 31. All applications are reviewed by the training committee, and select applicants are asked to visit for a personal interview. Three letters of recommendation are required:
- One from the director of the current training program
- One from a surgeon with whom the applicant has worked
- One from another professional with whom the applicant is personally acquainted, preferably a pediatric surgeon.
