Environmental Health: Industrial Hygiene Program
Overview
The Environmental Health program offers academic study in two areas: Industrial Hygiene and Occupational Ergonomics. Additionally, two certificate programs are available for Industrial Hygiene students to obtain specialized training in Hazardous Substances and Biomonitoring. The faculty in the Environmental and Occupational Hygiene division maintain nationally and internationally recognized research programs in various areas, including anticipation, recognition, evaluation, and control of workplace and environmental exposures.

Research Areas
The research programs focus on techniques for sampling chemical and biological aerosols, relationships between exposures and internal markers of effect, and relationships between exposure and chronic diseases such as silicosis and lung cancer. Other areas of research include occupational ergonomics, biomechanics, safety, and the effect of neurotoxic chemicals on neurobehavioral performance.
Career Opportunities
The program provides insights on industry, occupation, compensation, and projected growth for each profession, using extensive labor market data from Lightcast and the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Some careers may require additional training or education.
Curriculum
The curriculum guide is available for the MS Industrial Hygiene program, effective Fall 2025. Students can access the current student degree audit, transfer student course equivalencies, and search the UC schedule of classes.
Admission Requirements
To complete the application, students need to provide:
- College(s) attended
- Selection of the desired program
- CV or resume
- Statement of Purpose and objectives
- Unofficial transcripts for all higher education institutions attended
- Three Letters of Recommendation from individuals familiar with the student's academic or professional background
- International applicants whose native language is not English must take the TOEFL exam and submit official scores directly from the testing agency
- International transcripts should be evaluated by WES
- Official transcripts of all colleges and universities must be submitted if accepted

Application Deadlines
The application deadline for funding consideration is February 1st. Only students applying to the full-time programs in Environmental and Industrial Hygiene are eligible to receive University Graduate Assistantship funding.
Accreditation
The University of Cincinnati and all regional campuses are accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. The M.S. course of study in Industrial Hygiene is accredited by the Applied Sciences Accreditation Commission of ABET (ASAC/ABET).
