Program Overview
The Communication program is offered online and requires a major in COMM-DL. The program duration is 4 years, with a minimum of 120 credits required for completion.
Foundation Semester
The foundation semester consists of two half-semester periods, each with specific course requirements.
- 1st Half Semester:
- COMM2081: Business Communication (C min), 3 credits
- COMM3007: Introduction to Communication Theory (C min), 3 credits
- 2nd Half Semester:
- COMM1076: Introduction to Interpersonal Communication (C min), 3 credits
- COMM3006: Introduction to Rhetorical Theory (C min), 3 credits
Arts & Sciences General Education
Students must complete all required General Education courses for the College of Arts & Sciences. The following courses are required:
- ENGL1001: English Composition, 3 credits
- ENGL2089: Intermediate Composition, 3 credits
- Foreign Language or Cultural Studies Courses, 0-12 credits (please consult advisor)
- Natural Sciences (BoK: NS), 6 credits
- Quantitative Reasoning (BoK: QR), 6 credits
- Historical Perspective (BoK: HP), 6 credits (one must be from HIST subject area)
- Fine Arts or Humanities & Literature (BoK: FA,HU), 3 credits
- Social Sciences (BoK: SS), 3 credits (must be Arts & Sciences course)
Core Semester (Fall)
The core semester offered in the fall consists of two half-semester periods.
- 1st Half Semester:
- COMM2048: Event Planning & Fundraising Management, 3 credits
- COMM4029: Media and Technology, 3 credits
- 2nd Half Semester:
- COMM2042: Introduction to Public Relations, 3 credits
- COMM4067: Environmental Communication, 3 credits
Core Semester (Spring)
The core semester offered in the spring consists of two half-semester periods.
- 1st Half Semester:
- COMM1071: Introduction to Effective Speaking, 3 credits
- COMM3039: Communication Research Methods, 3 credits
- 2nd Half Semester:
- COMM2004: Communicating About Health, Environment and Science, 3 credits
- COMM2021: Communication in Problem-Solving Groups, 3 credits
Core Semester (Summer)
The core semester offered in the summer consists of two half-semester periods.
- 1st Half Semester:
- COMM2002: Advanced Public Speaking, 3 credits
- COMM3077: COMMUNICATION, IDENTITY, AND SPORT, 3 credits
- 2nd Half Semester:
- COMM2026: Introduction to Mass Communication, 3 credits
Capstone Semester (Fall)
The capstone semester offered in the fall consists of two half-semester periods.
- 1st Half Semester:
- COMM4013: Gender and Communication, 3 credits
- 2nd Half Semester:
- COMM5000: Capstone In Communication And Contemporary Issues, 3 credits
Credit Hours
The minimum number of credit hours required for the program is 120. However, this number can vary based on previously earned credits and/or the level of placement into required coursework.
