Program Overview

Master of Science in Electrical Engineering – Vancouver

The Master of Science in Electrical Engineering program in the School of ENCS offers both a thesis and non-thesis program.

Degree Description

The thesis option requires a significant research project as well as 30 total credit hours, including 21 hours of graded coursework beyond the bachelor’s degree plus a minimum of 4 thesis credits (ECE 700). The remaining five credits can be additional ECE 700 thesis credits or 500-level ECE classes.

The non-thesis option requires a minimum of 31 total credit hours, including 27 hours of graded coursework beyond the bachelor’s degree plus 4 credits of independent research (ECE 702). The final exam consists of a portfolio of representational projects from the student’s Master’s coursework, a resume/CV, a LinkedIn profile, and a ~5 page report.

The MSEE program has a Lab-on-a-Chip theme, which is used as a unifying platform to make connections between courses. The coursework and research are in the general areas of:

  • antenna design
  • RF/microwave systems
  • Micro
    anoelectronics
  • MEMS
  • sensors and signal processing
  • nanotechnology
  • power systems
  • power electronics and motor drives
  • digital/embedded systems

Our laboratories, including a class-100 clean room and RF laboratories, are equipped with state-of-the-art equipment.

Teaching and research assistantships are available for qualified students pursuing the thesis option.

Admission Requirements

A Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited program in electrical engineering provides a good background for the MSEE graduate program. Students with bachelor degrees in other engineering disciplines, mathematics, and the physical sciences may be admitted, but will be required to make up requisite undergraduate deficiencies. An undergraduate grade point average of 3.0 is a minimum for admission to the MS program.

Admission to the graduate program is a joint decision between the WSU Graduate School and the School of Engineering and Computer Science at WSU Vancouver. Submitting your application for admission to WSUV MSEE is a two-step process:

  1. Complete and submit the online application form specific to your interests in the School of Engineering and Computer Science. This form indicates your intention to apply to the Graduate School, and includes the student interest profile plus the optional application for a graduate assistantship in ENCS.
  2. Complete and submit the online application for the WSU Graduate School. Applications for any engineering program are now completed through the EngineeringCAS (centralized application) system.
  • Qualified students applying to the thesis program are eligible to be considered for a graduate assistantship.
  • Students applying to the non-thesis program are not eligible for a graduate assistantship.

You should be prepared to submit the following along with your application to the WSU Graduate School:

  1. Transcripts: required from all non-WSU colleges or universities you have previously attended.
  2. English Proficiency scores (international students)
  3. References: 3 references are required for an application to be considered complete
  • Thesis Program Applications: letters of recommendation, along with a Likert rating scale, will be requested on-line from your references.
  • Non-Thesis Program Applications: a Likert rating scale will be requested on-line from your references; letters of recommendation are not required.
  1. Resume
  2. Statement of Purpose

Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) are not required for admission to the MS in Electrical Engineering program at WSU Vancouver.

The WSU Vancouver MS in Electrical Engineering is designed and administered separately from the MS program in Pullman. If you designate the WSU Pullman program as your main objective, you will not be automatically considered by the Vancouver program.
