Program Overview
Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering – Vancouver
The Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering program in the School of ENCS offers thesis and non-thesis programs, which require a minimum of 30 credit hours.
Degree Description
The thesis program requires a significant research project as well as 21 hours of graded coursework beyond the bachelor’s degree, plus a minimum of 4 thesis credits (MECH 700). The remaining five credits can be additional MECH 700 thesis credits or 500-level MECH classes.
The non-thesis program requires 26 hours of graded coursework beyond the bachelor’s degree, plus a minimum of 4 independent research credits (MECH 702). The final exam consists of a portfolio of representational projects from the student’s Master’s coursework, a resume/CV, a LinkedIn profile, and a ~5 page report.
The program has a theme of Digital Design and Manufacturing, a modern and critical set of digital technologies for advanced modeling, simulation, analysis, integration of information technology, sensing, automation, and big data to rapidly design and manufacture products.
The coursework and research are in the general areas of product design, sustainable engineering, advanced materials, automation, and new manufacturing processes.
Teaching and research assistantships are available for qualified students pursuing the thesis option.
Admission Requirements
A Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited program in mechanical engineering provides a good background for the MSME graduate program. Students with bachelor’s degrees in other engineering disciplines, mathematics, or the physical sciences may need to take supplemental undergraduate courses. The specific requirements will depend on their prior academic preparation and intended research direction. Applicants are expected to consult with their faculty advisor to identify the appropriate coursework after starting the program. An undergraduate grade point average of 3.0 is a minimum for admission to the MS program.
Admission to the graduate program is a joint decision between the WSU Graduate School and the School of Engineering and Computer Science at WSU Vancouver. Submitting your application for admission to WSUV MSME is a two-step process:
- Complete and submit the online application form specific to your interests in the School of Engineering and Computer Science. This form indicates your intention to apply to the Graduate School, and includes the student interest profile plus the optional application for a graduate assistantship in ENCS.
- Complete and submit the online application for the WSU Graduate School. Applications for any engineering program are now completed through the EngineeringCAS (centralized application) system.
- Qualified students applying to the thesis program are eligible to be considered for a graduate assistantship.
- Students applying to the non-thesis program are not eligible for a graduate assistantship.
You should be prepared to submit the following along with your application to the WSU Graduate School:
- Transcripts: required from all non-WSU colleges or universities you have previously attended.
- English Proficiency scores (international students)
- References: 3 references are required for an application to be considered complete
- Thesis Program Applications: letters of recommendation, along with a Likert rating scale, will be requested on-line from your references.
