Introduction
The RWTH Aachen University offers a preparatory German language course for prospective students who are refugees. The course aims to improve the participants' German language skills to the B2/C1 level, enabling them to pursue their studies at the university.
Course Details
- Duration: October 20, 2025, to February 6, 2026
- Class Schedule:
- Mondays: 9:00 AM - 1:15 PM
- Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays: 9:00 AM - 1:15 PM
- Thursdays: 1:00 PM - 4:30 PM
- Location: The course will take place in person at the Language Center of RWTH Aachen University. Currently, no online courses are offered.
Target Group
The course is designed for individuals who meet the following requirements:
- Recognized refugee status in Germany or individuals in the asylum process
- Eligibility to pursue higher education in Germany (higher education entrance qualification)
- Proof of current German language skills at the B2 level
Course Content
The course will focus on:
- Reviewing and deepening the B1 level and expanding knowledge with materials beyond the B1 level to reach the C1 level
- Skills training, including:
- Listening and reading comprehension, grammar
- Written and oral expression
- Note-taking and dictation
- Writing training: composing texts according to guidelines
- Oral expression training: exercises on presentations, discussions, and more
- Pronunciation training
- Vocabulary expansion
- Conveying country-specific knowledge
- Conveying and applying learning strategies
- Guidance on autonomous learning and individual learning counseling
Support Measures
The International Office of RWTH Aachen University will offer counseling services to course participants on studying at RWTH, supporting them in applying for a study place and starting their potential studies at RWTH Aachen.
Application Process
Applications must be submitted in full by July 18, 2025, as a PDF file. The application should include:
- The completed application form
- Documents proving eligibility to attend a German university (copies of school certificates or study achievements in the original and in German or English translation)
- Motivation letter: explaining why you are applying for the language course
- Proof of identity (passport or replacement passport)
- Both-sided copy of the residence permit with a copy of the current address in Germany
- Proof of current German language skills at the B2 level
Further Steps
- Successful applicants will be invited to an online placement test in mid-August 2025.
- Only 20 places are available in the course. After the placement test, these places will be allocated among those who have passed the test. There is no guarantee of getting a course place.
- Participation in the German language course is not connected to the application for a study place at RWTH Aachen University. The application for a study place is a separate process and must be carried out independently of participation in the language course. The International Office of RWTH Aachen University will advise on this topic.
