Program Overview
Overview of the Master's Program in Chemistry
The Master's program in Chemistry at RWTH Aachen University is designed to provide students with a broad foundation in chemistry, allowing for specialization at a later stage. The program is built on the Bachelor's program in Chemistry and aims to deepen students' knowledge in theoretical and practical chemistry.
Program Structure
The Master's program in Chemistry consists of four semesters, with the fourth semester dedicated to the Master's thesis. The program offers four areas of specialization:
- Bioactive Compounds and Synthetic Methods (SYN)
- Catalysis (CAT)
- Materials and Mesoscopic Systems: Solids, Polymers, and Nanostructures (MES)
- Computer Chemistry and Spectroscopy (COS)
Students can choose two of these areas in any combination. Each area includes lectures and a research internship, which is conducted in a working group on a current research topic. The internship aims to teach students independent research planning and experimentation.
Admission Requirements
To be admitted to the Master's program in Chemistry, students must have a first university degree. The required academic background is specified in the examination regulations. The examination board determines whether the admission requirements are met.
Career Prospects
Graduates of the Master's program in Chemistry can pursue a Ph.D. The Master's degree and, in particular, a Ph.D. are the starting points for careers in the chemical industry and many other fields.
Module Handbook and Examination Regulations
The module handbook provides an overview of all modules in the program, offering a comprehensive insight into its content. The examination regulations govern study objectives, prerequisites, study progression, and examinations.
Faculty and Study Advice
The Master's program in Chemistry is offered by the Department of Chemistry in the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. Study advice is available for students, including counseling for students and prospective students, subject-specific study advice, and student representation.
Formalities
Relevant information for starting studies in the first semester and in higher semesters is available. Introductory events are also offered to help students get started.
