Introduction to the Guarini School of Graduate and Advanced Studies
The Guarini School of Graduate and Advanced Studies offers a range of programs for graduate students, including the PhD Innovation Program. This program is designed to provide students with the skills and knowledge necessary to create a new enterprise, such as a start-up company, a new division of an established company, or a government or non-profit enterprise.
PhD Innovation Program
The PhD Innovation Program is a highly selective program that is open to Guarini PhD students who are outside the Engineering program and who are in their first or second year of study. The program is designed to provide students with the skills and knowledge necessary to create a new enterprise, and it includes a range of courses and research opportunities.
Program Requirements
To be eligible for the PhD Innovation Program, students must meet the following requirements:
- Be a Guarini PhD student outside the Engineering program
- Be in their first or second year of study
- Have a strong academic record
- Have a demonstrated interest in entrepreneurship and innovation
Program Structure
The PhD Innovation Program includes the following components:
- Four courses:
- ENGM 187: Technology Innovation and Entrepreneurship
- ENGM 180.1: Accounting and Finance
- ENGM 188: Law for Technology and Entrepreneurship
- ENGG 321: Introduction to Innovation (capstone course)
- A 3-6 month internship in a start-up company, larger venture, or new venture creation
- Research opportunities, including the chance to work with faculty members and industry partners
Application Process
To apply for the PhD Innovation Program, students must submit the following materials:
- Curriculum Vitae (3-page max)
- Statement (2-page max) describing reasons for interest in the program, long-term career goals, and an example of creativity in arriving at a solution
- Statement (2-page max) describing a broad technology development problem that interests the student
- Letter of recommendation from the student's thesis advisor
Funding and Support
Students who are admitted to the PhD Innovation Program will receive 50% stipend support for their second and third years, and 100% stipend support for their fourth and fifth years. They will also receive research funds for up to three years to allow them to follow their ideas independent of their advisor's funded research program.
