Program Overview
The Bachelor of General Studies (BGS) in English is a degree program offered by the University of Kansas. This program requires completion of a single BGS major and a secondary field of academic study, which can be a second major, co-major, or minor.
Program Requirements
- The program consists of 120 total hours, with 45 hours at the junior/senior (300+) level.
- Students must complete Core 34 requirements, which include:
- English (SGE)010
- Communications (SGE)020
- Math and Statistics (SGE)030
- Natural and Physical Sciences (SGE)040
- Social and Behavior Science (SGE)050
- US Culture (SGE)070
- Global Culture (SGE)070
- Arts and Humanities (SGE)060
- English major coursework includes:
- ENGL 203, 209, 210, or 220 (Core 34: Arts and Humanities)
- ENGL 300
- ENGL 300+ from Rhetoric, Language, or Writing Studies
- ENGL 300+ from Cultural Engagement Area
- ENGL 300+ from Literature, Language, or Rhetoric before 1850
- ENGL 300+ Elective
- ENGL 500+ Capstone Course
- Students may pursue a concentration in a particular field by taking at least 3 courses in it, including a capstone.
- Concentrations include:
- Creative Writing: two 300-level workshops (each in a different genre), and one creative writing capstone
- Language, Culture, and Rhetoric: ENGL 380 or ENGL 387, another LCR course, and one LCR capstone
Capstone Requirements
- Students must complete ENGL 300 and 2 other 300-level courses before proceeding to the capstone requirements.
- All 500-level or above English courses are capstone courses.
- Students pursuing departmental honors may use ENGL 598 to fill one capstone requirement and must also enroll in ENGL 599 Honors Essay.

Notes
- Before beginning 300+ level English courses, it is recommended that students take a 200-level English course.
- One 200-level course may be counted toward English Studies major coursework.
- Hour requirements (including 45 junior/senior hours) are typically met through Core 34, degree, major, second area of study, and/or elective hours.
- Students completing the BGS with a major must choose a secondary area of study.
- Individual degree mapping is done in partnership with an advisor.
- ENGL 362, ENGL 496, and ENGL 497 may fulfill BGS career course requirements when taken for 3 credit hours.
