Program Overview


BGS in English with concentration in Language, Culture, and Rhetoric

The Bachelor of General Studies in English with a concentration in Language, Culture, and Rhetoric is a comprehensive program designed to provide students with a deep understanding of the English language, its cultural context, and the art of rhetoric.


Program Requirements

  • The program requires a total of 120-121 hours of coursework.
  • Students must complete 45 hours of junior/senior-level coursework.
  • The program includes a capstone requirement, which consists of two ENGL 500+ level courses.
  • Students must also complete a BGS Career Prep Course, which can be fulfilled by taking ENGL 362, ENGL 496, or ENGL 497.

  • Before beginning 300+ level English courses, students are encouraged to take a 200-level English course.
  • One 200-level course may be counted toward English Studies coursework.
  • Hour requirements (including 45 junior/senior hours) are typically met through Core 34, degree, major, second area of study, and/or elective hours.
  • Students completing the BGS with a major must choose a secondary area of study.
  • Individual degree mapping is done in partnership with an advisor.
  • The Bachelor of General Studies degree requires completion of a single BGS major and a secondary field of academic study (a second major, co-major, or minor).
