Graduate Certificate in Urban Design

Overview

The Urban Design Certificate program enhances students’ ability to concentrate on topics related to sustainable place-making and creating human-scale spaces by focusing on urban theory, history, and design.


Program Details

  • Total Credit Hours for Completion: 12
  • Required Courses:
    • All students working towards the Urban Design Certificate are required to take ARCH 620 for 3 credits.
    • Students in the professional M. Arch program can complete ARCH 814 for 6 credits.
    • Both M. Arch students and students from outside the Department of Architecture can take urban-focused courses in ARCH and UBPL to fulfill the remaining credits.

Learning Outcomes

At the completion of this program, students will be able to:


  • Engage and participate in urban research, mapping and analysis to understand the constituent elements of a city and how they holistically function as a cultural, ecological and infrastructural system.
  • Develop the ability to research, analyze and make design decisions for urban-scale projects while demonstrating the synthesis of user requirements, regulatory requirements, site context, site conditions and consideration of the measurable environmental impacts of their design decisions.
  • Understand approaches to leadership in multi-disciplinary teams, diverse stakeholder constituents, dynamic physical contexts, and learn how to apply effective collaboration skills to address and communicate complex urban design challenges.
