Introduction to the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Program
The Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Program at UCSF Fresno is a four-year program, fully accredited and approved by the American Dental Association. The program has a house staff of 16 residents, with four residents per year.
Program Overview
The program is designed to train experts in head, face, neck, and jaw surgery. The parent hospital, Community Regional Medical Center, is the only Level 1 Trauma Center serving Central California and has the largest and one of the busiest emergency departments in the state.
Clinical Experience
Residents in the program treat a large volume of patients and are exposed to a broad scope of surgical procedures before graduating. The surgical scope of the program includes:
- Trauma
- Head and Neck Cancer/Malignancies
- Benign Head and Neck Pathology
- Microvascular/Head and Neck Reconstruction
- Dentoalveolar Surgery
- Dental Implants
- Outpatient Anesthesia
- Facial Cosmetic Surgery
- TMJ Surgery
- Orthognathic Surgery
- Cleft Lip and Palate
- Reconstructive Maxillofacial Surgery

Program Structure
The program includes:
- A four-year residency
- Clinical rotations at various hospitals, including Valley Children’s Healthcare, the VA Central California Health Care System, St. Agnes Medical Center, Kaiser Permanente Fresno, and Clovis Community Medical Center
- An outpatient clinic with approximately 20,000 patients per year, including roughly 700 patients treated with light IV general anesthesia and/or deep conscious IV sedation
