Introduction to the Emergency Medicine PA Residency Program
The Emergency Medicine Physician Assistant Postgraduate Training Program at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) is an 18-month program that accepts two PA trainees per year. The program is affiliated with the UCSF School of Medicine and is based at Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno, California.
Program Overview
The program was founded in 2015 and began its first class in 2016. The curriculum is based on the Model of the Clinical Practice of Emergency Medicine and the Society of Emergency Medicine Physician Assistants (SEMPA) Emergency Medicine Physician Assistant Postgraduate Training Program Standards. PA trainees learn and work alongside physician residents during their clinical and didactic training, with a strong emphasis on clinical teaching and hands-on training.
Program Goals
The purpose of the Physician Assistant Postgraduate Training Program is to provide extensive emergency medicine patient management skills that would propel graduates into successful future careers in both academic and private practice settings.
Program Structure
- The program is 18 months long
- Two PA trainees are accepted per year

- PA trainees learn and work alongside physician residents during their clinical and didactic training
Program Faculty and Resources
- The UCSF Fresno Emergency Medicine Program, established in 1974, is one of the oldest emergency medicine programs in the country
- The program has a strong faculty with nearly 200 full-time faculty members representing all specialties
- The UCSF Fresno Medical Education and Research Center has excellent resources, including office space, a library, an auditorium, and multiple conference rooms with full audiovisual support
- The center also has a clinical research center and a simulation lab
