Introduction to the ALAS Program

The ALAS program, also known as the Academic and Leadership Academy Summer Program, is a 3-day interactive program designed to support Latinx students, those who are medically, economically, or educationally disadvantaged, and students interested in serving medically, economically, or educationally disadvantaged populations. This program is offered during the summer between the first and second years of medical school.

Program Details

• The program uses an equity pedagogy framework to deliver an experiential curriculum focused on developing effective clinical reasoning, mastering oral case presentations, and excelling in the clinical environment.
• Through small group sessions led by experienced ALAS faculty, students gain the opportunity to benefit from individualized observation, structured feedback, and hands-on practice in a supportive and welcoming setting.
• The program is led by UCSF LCOE faculty, including Dr. Denise Connor, Dr. Sarah Alba-Nguyen, and Dr. Daniela Maristany.

Curriculum and Schedule

• The program is a 3-Day Intensive.
• It includes Pre-Clerkship Check In and Pre-Acting Internship Check in.
• Celebrating and Next Steps are also part of the program.
• The program occurs during the first week of August.

Eligibility and Application

• The ALAS program is open to all students who are interested in working with medically, economically, or educationally disadvantaged populations.
• All are welcome to apply, and ALAS does not use race, gender, sex, or other protected categories or proxies for protected categories in the selection process.
