Message from the Program Director

The UCSF General Surgery Residency Program offers a unique and comprehensive training experience. The program has recently introduced a new 5-year track, in addition to the traditional 7-year track, to cater to the diverse needs and goals of its residents.

UCSF General Surgery Residency Tracks

The program offers two tracks:

  • 7-Year Track: Residents in this pathway will complete 3 years of clinical training, followed by 2 years of professional development/research, and then complete their final 2 years of clinical training. This track will match six of the eight categorical general surgery residents.
  • 5-Year Track: Residents in this pathway will complete the 5 years of clinical training without dedicated research years but will have focused opportunities for professional development and scholarly activity during the clinical years. This track will match two of the eight categorical general surgery residents.
