Introduction to the PGY2 Pediatrics Program
The PGY2 Pediatrics residency program at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) is designed to build upon the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and PGY1 pharmacy residency training. The program aims to develop pharmacist practitioners with advanced knowledge, skills, and abilities in pediatric pharmacy practice.
Purpose
The purpose of the PGY2 Pediatrics residency program is to provide residents with the opportunity to strengthen their clinical skills in pediatric pharmacy practice. The program is accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) and is designed to prepare residents for advanced patient care or other specialized positions, as well as board certification in pediatric pharmacy.
Description
The PGY2 Pediatrics residency program is a one-year program that provides residents with in-depth clinical experience in a variety of areas within pediatric and neonatal medicine. The program is based at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital, a 189-bed children's hospital that is part of the UCSF Medical Center. The hospital includes 58 neonatal ICU beds, 37 hematology/oncology/BMT beds, 28 general pediatric and surgical beds, 28 transitional care beds, 38 ICU beds, and 36 obstetrics and labor and delivery beds.
Learning Experiences
The PGY2 Pediatrics residency program provides residents with a variety of learning experiences, including:
- Rotations: Residents participate in core rotations, including general pediatrics, neonatal intensive care, pediatric intensive care, cardiac intensive care, and hematology/oncology.
- Longitudinal experiences: Residents participate in longitudinal experiences, including pharmacy operations, education, research, and leadership excellence.
- Elective rotations: Residents can choose from a variety of elective rotations, including bone marrow transplant, infectious disease, solid organ transplant, emergency medicine, and labor and delivery.
Research
The PGY2 Pediatrics residency program includes a research component, where residents participate in the UCSF Research Certificate Program and gain skills in research design, methodology, and analysis. Residents are required to complete a research project and present their findings at the end of the program.
Teaching
The PGY2 Pediatrics residency program includes a teaching component, where residents receive training in teaching methodology, precepting, and small group conference facilitation. Residents have the opportunity to teach Doctor of Pharmacy students and participate in interprofessional education with nursing and physician groups.

Residents in the PGY2 Pediatrics residency program are integral members of the interprofessional emergency response care team and participate in code responses, including pediatric and adult code training.
