Program Overview
Introduction to the Global Health Fellowship
The UCSF Department of Emergency Medicine offers one- and two-year fellowships in Global Health for emergency medicine residency-trained physicians. This program is designed for mature candidates with prior global health experience who are looking to develop experience in health policy and work in emergency care system development.
Program Details
We offer fellows the opportunity to develop advocacy and policy experience through a consultancy at the World Health Organization. If desired, additional field-level health systems development opportunities are available working with Muhimbili National Hospital’s Emergency Medicine Department (the only department in Tanzania staffed by EM specialists and with emergency medicine residents) as well as at Mulago Hospital and Makerere University. The fellow also has the opportunity to develop experience in the health policy and advocacy realm as well as in systems development at the regional level through the African Federation for Emergency Medicine (AFEM), with opportunities to participate in meaningful research, both through UCSF programs as well as through AFEM’s Scientific Committee.
Eligibility
- Graduate of an ACGME-approved Emergency Medicine residency program
- Board-eligible or board-certified in Emergency Medicine
- Must possess a California Medical License and a valid DEA license in order to begin the training program
- Note that we sponsor J-1 or H-1B visas for this non-ACGME fellowship.
