Operative Experience

The fellow will participate in Mohs micrographic surgical reconstruction, facial reanimation surgery, facial feminization/masculinization surgery, functional and cosmetic rhinoplasty and aging face surgery, as well as head and neck oncologic and skull base microvascular reconstructive surgery with Drs. P. Daniel Knott and Andrea Park. The fellow acts as attending surgeon in educating Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery residents, as well as directly with attendings in the OR. Surgical experience includes an average of 5-8 major cases weekly. The fellow will have the opportunity to work with greater independence at the SFGH and SFVA medical centers. Close collaboration with oculoplastic surgery, dermatologic surgery, and oromaxillofacial surgery is encouraged.

Outpatient Experience

The fellow will work with the facial plastic and reconstructive surgery attendings and their patients, have responsibility for his or her own patients, and actively participate in weekly tumor board, which discusses an average of 15 new patients and 25 patients total weekly. The fellow will oversee a fellow-run clinic as well. There will be the opportunity to follow selected patients through their non-operative treatment as well. In addition, the fellow has teaching responsibilities associated with Journal Club, the head and neck dissection course, and departmental grand rounds.

Research

Clinical and/or basic science research is expected. The faculty will guide the fellow through the scholarly process and provide mentorship, including research design and statistical analysis.

Call Responsibilities

Call 1 week every 12 weeks: about 4 weeks/year. Privileges are also granted at the San Francisco General Hospital and Veterans Administration Medical Center to facilitate call.
