Overview of the Graduate Certificate in Noise Control

The Graduate Certificate in Noise Control is a 100% online program designed to enhance understanding of Noise Control Engineering processes and technologies and their applications in the industry. This certificate program meets the needs of mid-career and late-career engineers new to the area of Noise Control. The certificate is also appropriate for engineering managers who need a background in Noise Control and its implementation in emerging technologies.

Certificate Requirements

The Graduate Certificate in Noise Control requires 12 credit hours. An average grade of B or higher in the two core courses and an average of B or higher overall are required. Core courses with low grades may be repeated once, or, for elective courses only, substitute another approved elective. This repetition or replacement will be allowed for a maximum of two courses only.

Required NC Courses – 6 Credit Hours

  • ME 51300: Engineering Acoustics
  • ME 56300: Mechanical Vibrations

Electives – 6 Credit Hours

Choose two of the following:

  • ME 57900: Fourier Methods in Digital Signal Processing
  • ME 50000: Thermodynamics
  • ME 50900: Intermediate Fluid Mechanics
  • ME 57500: Theory and Design of Control Systems
  • MA 51100: Linear Algebra with Applications
  • MA 52500: Introduction to Complex Analysis

Criteria for Admissions

Applicants must hold a bachelor's degree in an appropriate area (Engineering, Science, Mathematics, or Technology) with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 or equivalent (A=4.0). Acceptance into the certificate program does not assure admission to the Graduate School of Purdue University to pursue an advanced degree. Those who wish to pursue a degree program along with the certificate will need to fill out two separate applications, each with a different semester start term.

FAQs

Can transfer courses from a different institution be utilized for the NC certificate?

Yes. Up to three semester credits can be transferred from another university (effectively, one of four courses); the remainder must be earned at Purdue. Students should speak to their Academic Advisor once beginning the program for specific transfer criteria.

Can Purdue non-degree courses be used for the NC certificate?

Yes. Students can take a maximum of 12 credit hours as a non-degree student and utilize them for a certificate or advanced degree program. Students should ensure they are selecting courses that fit within their desired program’s curriculum.

Can the NC certificate courses be used for a master's degree?

Yes. Students can utilize the courses they took within their certificate program for a master’s degree program. A maximum of 12 credits from the NC certificate can be applied to a Purdue degree program. Check with the department of your intended degree program for specifics.

Is there a minimum grade point average required to complete the Certificate?

A graduate student is expected to maintain a graduation index representing a B average (3.0/4.0 GPA) or better. A student's 12 credits of graduate coursework must be cumulatively calculated at a 3.0 or higher in order to receive the Graduate Certificate.
