The mission of the Lyles School of Civil and Construction Engineering is to excel in the sciences and arts of the fields of Civil Engineering and Construction Engineering through education, scholarship, research, and service.
Goals of the School
The goals of the Lyles School of Civil and Construction Engineering are to:
- Provide an educational experience of the highest quality to undergraduate and graduate students through a program of study that accommodates individual interests and career goals
- Provide a solid foundation for students who wish to pursue graduate studies
- Maintain national and international leadership in advancing engineering knowledge through research and scholarship

BSCE Program Objectives
The objective of the BSCE degree program is to prepare graduates to successfully pursue their professional career objectives in a civil engineering-related field. The school considers this objective to be realized if a majority of graduates:
- Are employed in a civil engineering or related profession or are pursuing an advanced degree
- Achieve increasing levels of responsibility and work towards leadership roles in their chosen professions, effectively contributing to the advancement of their organizations and communities by leveraging their technical expertise and professional skills to devise solutions to complex engineering and societal challenges
Undergraduate Student Program Outcomes
The undergraduate program in civil engineering is designed to produce graduates who possess the following skills and abilities:
- An ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics
- An ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors
- An ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences
- An ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts
- An ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives
- An ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions
- An ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies

The BS program in Civil Engineering is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, under the commission's General Criteria and the Program Criteria for Civil and Similarly Named Engineering Programs. The BS program in Construction Engineering is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, under the commission's General Criteria and the Program Criteria for Construction and Similarly Named Engineering Programs.
