Advanced Endoscopy Fellowship Program

The Advanced Endoscopy Program within the Division of Gastroenterology at Rutgers University Hospital offers advanced training in both diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy, geared toward an academic endoscopist. The program is designed as a one-year curriculum for both technical and cognitive skills acquisition with an expectation to participate in research projects as part of the advanced training.

Program Overview

During the one-year advanced endoscopy fellowship, Fellows will receive training in all aspects of modern diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy including broad exposure to ERCP and EUS along with EMR, endoluminal stenting, endoscopic mucosal ablation, and device-assisted enteroscopy. The advanced endoscopy fellow will have ample exposure to endobariatrics (e.g., endoscopic sleeve and TORe), endohepatology (e.g., EUS guided porto-systemic pressure measurement, coil and glue embolization of varices and shunts), endoscopic suturing and closure, Trans-Oral Fundoplication, 3rd space endoscopy (e.g., POEM, ESD, free-hand and device-assisted full thickness resection), as well as advanced EUS guided anastomosis and drainage techniques as part of their training. The fellowship training and curriculum will be tailored to the fellows’ needs and career goals.

Program Structure

• The program length is one year.
• One fellow per year is accepted into the program.
• The training year begins in July and is available to those who have completed a standard ACGME accredited three-year gastroenterology fellowship and are Board Certified in Internal Medicine.

Program Goals

By the end of their training, fellows will be prepared to assume faculty positions where they will be capable of developing independent clinical and research programs in advanced and therapeutic endoscopy. In addition to the technical aspect of endoscopy, fellows are trained in required cognitive skills including interpretation of fluoroscopy and cross-sectional imaging, didactics and conferences including case conferences, GI Grand Rounds, GI Journal Club, and pathology and tumor boards. Fellows participate in ongoing research projects in advanced endoscopy as part of their training and are expected to present during national and international conferences and publish in major endoscopy journals. Fellows develop teaching and leadership skills through interaction with medical students, residents, as well as supervision of junior GI fellows.
