Writing Program Overview
The Writing Program at Rutgers University offers a comprehensive curriculum designed to equip students with the skills necessary for effective writing in various professional settings. The program is geared towards students in the Business and Technical Writing minor, as well as those seeking elective credit towards graduation.
Program Structure
The Writing Program consists of several components, including:
- Undergraduate courses, such as College Writing, Research in Disciplines, and Business & Technical Writing
- A minor in Business & Technical Writing, which includes courses, requirements, and certificates

Internship Program
The Writing Internship course (01:355:397) is a key component of the program, offering students the opportunity to acquire practical experience in a variety of professional settings. The course is primarily geared towards students in the Business and Technical Writing minor, but is also open to students seeking elective credit towards graduation.
Internship Requirements
To enroll in the internship course, students must:
- Locate a potential internship position, which must be approved by the Internship Course Director
- Complete an internship application form
- Meet with the Internship Course Director to discuss the internship placement and requirements
- The internship requires students to work a minimum of 120 hours throughout the term, with regular meetings with the Internship Course Director and submission of a final portfolio and paper.
Internship Course Components
The internship course consists of two components:
- The Work Component: Students work in a professional setting, completing tasks and projects assigned by their supervisor.
- The Academic Component: Students meet with the Internship Course Director, submit a final portfolio of workplace writing, and complete a final paper that reflects on their experiences and situates the internship in the context of writing in the workplace.
Grading and Evaluation
The course grade is determined by the quality of the final paper, with the work component being a requirement for passing. The course is graded on a pass/fail basis, effective Fall 2015.
Writing Program Faculty and Staff
The Writing Program is led by a team of experienced faculty and staff, including directors, instructors, and tutors. The program also offers a range of resources and support services, including tutoring, academic advising, and career counseling.
Special Programs and Events
The Writing Program hosts a range of special programs and events, including the Research Writing Conference, Writing Program Institute, and Dialogues@RU.
