Program Overview
Introduction to the Master of Business and Science Degree
The Master of Business and Science (MBS) degree is a Professional Science Master's (PSM) program designed to address the gap in graduate education in the sciences. This program combines graduate-level, science-based education with business knowledge, making it ideal for students pursuing STEM-based careers outside academia and industry employers looking for candidates with both scientific and business expertise.
History of the Professional Science Master's Program
The Professional Science Master's (PSM) program was created in the mid-1990s to address the growing gap in graduate education in the sciences. In 1997, the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation began funding the creation of master's-level degree programs for students pursuing non-academic science-based careers. The demand for these programs grew rapidly, and from 1997 to 2010, the Sloan Foundation funded more than 100 PSM programs at over 50 universities, including Rutgers University.
