Program Overview


Introduction to the Master of Health Administration (MHA) Program

The Master of Health Administration (MHA) program at the Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the healthcare environment, leadership and professional development, management and business, communication and relationship management, and entrepreneurship and innovation. The program's curriculum is based on a competency model that includes 19 competencies within five domains.


Program Competencies

The five domains of the MHA program's competency model are:


  1. The Healthcare Environment: This domain includes competencies such as healthcare structure, health policy, law, and ethics, healthcare quality, and disparity in clinical and population-level health outcomes.
  2. Leadership and Professional Development: This domain includes competencies such as leadership theories, styles, and practices, strategic planning, and ethical leadership and commitment to lifelong learning.
  3. Management and Business: This domain includes competencies such as quality improvement, financial analysis and budgets, operational management, human resource management, health information systems, ethics and compliance, and data analytics.
  4. Communication and Relationship Management: This domain includes competencies such as written communication, oral communication, and team dynamics.
  5. Entrepreneurship and Innovation: This domain includes competencies such as entrepreneurship and innovation, and emerging technologies.

Program Details

  • The MHA program is designed to move students from novice to advanced beginner to competent levels across all competencies.
  • Every core course in the program is linked to one or more of the competencies.
  • Students will find themselves situated at different levels of expertise, from novice (1-2) to advanced beginner (3-4) and to competent (5-6) by graduation.
  • The program's competency scale runs from 1 to 10, with levels 7-10 reflecting a level of knowledge and skill that can only be achieved following decades in the field, advanced studies, or dedicated experiential learning.
