Program Overview

Introduction to the Master of Health Administration (MHA) Program

The Master of Health Administration (MHA) program at the Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy is designed to provide students with a comprehensive education in health administration. The program is committed to preparing students for leadership roles in the healthcare industry.

Admission Criteria

To be considered for admission to the MHA program, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Completion of an undergraduate degree with a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.25 or better
  • Evidence of growth and maturation during undergraduate studies, as defined by improvement in academic performance and competence over time
  • Employment in the healthcare management area or a cognate professional area is highly recommended
  • No Graduate Record Examinations (GREs) are required
  • International students are required to submit TOEFL/IELTS/DuoLingo scores

Non-Matriculation Status

In special circumstances, an applicant may be considered for non-matriculation status. This status allows the potential candidate to demonstrate their ability to thrive in the MHA program by maintaining a GPA of at least 3.0 or better during the completion of up to 12 credits. Upon successful completion of these credits, the candidate may ask to be reconsidered for admission.

Credits Required for the MHA

Successful completion of the MHA program requires satisfactory completion of 45 approved core and elective credits beyond the baccalaureate.

Minimum Grade Point Average Required for Degree Completion

Students enrolled in the Rutgers MHA program must achieve a final Grade Point Average of 3.000 or better to be awarded the MHA degree.

Limitation of Grades

The Bloustein School requires that no more than 9 credits of C or C+ grades may be used in meeting the requirements for any degree. All students must maintain an overall grade-point average of 3.0 or better at all times.

Universal Review

All students enrolled in the MHA program are evaluated each semester to assess their satisfactory progress toward the MHA degree. Students with a deficiency are notified in writing and have a remediation plan developed.

Matriculation Continued

MHA students in good academic standing may register for Matriculation Continued status, which preserves their active status in the program and does not require readmission.

Limited Single Course Waiver

MHA students who have completed a Bachelor of Science in Health Administration from the Bloustein School with an "A" in their Introduction to Health Administration course can substitute the undergraduate course for the required Principles of Health Administration course.

Substitution of Credits

MHA students who receive prior approval from the Program Director may apply to transfer graduate credits representing no more than 25% of the degree credit total for the program that are related to health administration taken at another accredited institution or other school within Rutgers.

Grading

The MHA program uses a standard grading scale for all courses, with letter grades assigned based on the following scale:

  • A: 100% to 90.0%
