World Languages Institute

The World Languages Institute offers various programs and courses for students and in-service teachers. The institute is designed to address the needs and concerns of students preparing to teach foreign languages in K-12 schools and in-service teachers who need a methods course for endorsement or licensure.

Methods of World Language Teaching, K-12

This course is designed to address the needs and concerns of students preparing to teach foreign languages in the K-12 schools and in-service teachers who need a methods course for endorsement or licensure. It will also serve in-service teachers who are seeking to update their knowledge of second-language acquisition and instruction for personal growth or for academic credit toward state re-licensing or for national board certification.

Course Description

This methods course is organized around the Standards for Foreign Language Learning, commonly referred to as the Five Cs: Communication, Cultures, Connections, Comparisons, and Communities. Students will learn about current theoretical bases for second-language acquisition and how theory informs classroom practice. The course does not promote a particular methodology but rather presents principles of learning from which teachers can draw as they make decisions about instruction. In today's classrooms with diverse learners and curricular options, teachers must possess a repertoire of teaching practices based on an evolving research and knowledge base.

Registration

Registration for this course will be accepted on a first come, first served basis. Once the course is full, a waiting list will be created. In order to be placed on the waiting list, you must have submitted your completed registration form. If spaces become available, registration forms will be processed from the waiting list in the order that the forms were received.

Master of Arts for Teachers (MAT)

The Master of Arts for Teachers (MAT) program is designed for students who are preparing to teach foreign languages in K-12 schools. The program provides students with a comprehensive education in language teaching methodologies, second-language acquisition, and cultural studies.

Certificate in World Language Teaching (CWLT)

The Certificate in World Language Teaching (CWLT) program is designed for in-service teachers who are seeking to update their knowledge of second-language acquisition and instruction. The program provides students with a comprehensive education in language teaching methodologies, second-language acquisition, and cultural studies.

Graduate Language Proficiency Exam

The Graduate Language Proficiency Exam is designed to assess the language proficiency of graduate students in the World Languages Institute. The exam is required for all graduate students who are pursuing a degree in a language-related field.

Summer Reading Knowledge Courses

The Summer Reading Knowledge Courses are designed to provide students with a comprehensive education in language teaching methodologies, second-language acquisition, and cultural studies. The courses are offered during the summer semester and are open to all students who are interested in language teaching and learning.

K-12 World Language Job Postings

The K-12 World Language Job Postings are designed to provide students and in-service teachers with information about job opportunities in language teaching. The postings are updated regularly and are available on the World Languages Institute website.

Video Digitization and Hosting

The Video Digitization and Hosting service is designed to provide students and faculty with a comprehensive video digitization and hosting solution. The service is available to all students and faculty who are affiliated with the World Languages Institute.

The Language Bank

The Language Bank is a language learning resource center that provides students with access to language learning materials, including textbooks, audio and video recordings, and language learning software. The Language Bank is open to all students who are enrolled in a language course at Rutgers University.

Honor Societies

The Honor Societies are designed to recognize the academic achievements of students who are pursuing a degree in a language-related field. The societies are open to all students who meet the eligibility requirements and are interested in language teaching and learning.
