Writing Program Overview
The Writing Program at Rutgers University is designed to introduce students to the strategies and practices necessary to become successful writers at the university level and beyond. The program challenges students to reflect upon and cultivate their strengths as readers and writers at this new stage of their educational careers.
Program Structure
- The program includes various courses, such as College Writing, Research in Disciplines, and Business & Technical Writing.
- Students can also pursue a Minor in Business & Technical Writing, which includes courses and certificates.
- The program offers tutoring services and special programs like the Research Writing Conference and the Writing Program Institute.
Undergraduate Program
About Us
The undergraduate program in the Writing Program is designed to help students develop their critical reading abilities and written communication skills.
Requirements and Placement
- Placement is determined by the university's writing placement test.
- The First Writing Requirement is College Writing (WC), and there are Additional Writing Requirements: WCd, WCr.
- Students must complete the writing requirement each semester until it is fulfilled.

- About: The minor is designed to provide students with the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in business and technical writing.
- Requirements: Students must complete a series of courses and certificates to fulfill the minor requirements.

College Writing Extended (01:355:104)
Course Description
College Writing Extended introduces students to the strategies and practices necessary to become a successful writer at the university level and beyond. The course includes an 80-minute writing lab each week, in addition to the standard class meetings.
Course Objectives
The overarching goal of the course is for students to develop habits of reading and writing that will allow them to respond successfully to the varied rhetorical challenges they will encounter in their future studies and in their lives beyond the university.
Student Learning Outcomes
Students who successfully complete College Writing Extended will be able to:
- Read as a writer: Identify different types of texts in relation to their purpose and audience.
- Join the conversation: Engage the ideas of others while developing their own understanding about complex issues.
- Present ideas creatively: Consider the form and structure of written prose and explore the use of images, videos, and other media to convey ideas.
- Approach writing as a process: Practice the strategies and habits of successful writers, including drafting, revising, and responding to feedback.

Internships and Employment
Information on internships and employment opportunities is available through the Writing Program.
Academic Policies
- Students may not drop College Writing Extended from their course schedules.
- In rare cases of verifiable emergency, the Director or Executive Director of the Writing Program may grant permission for students to withdraw from the course.
- Students who experience an emergency or other extenuating circumstance should contact the Office of the Dean of Students – Student Support area.
