Internal Medicine Residency Program

The Department of Medicine at Rutgers NJMS offers a 4-year combined Internal Medicine-Preventive Medicine (IM-PM) residency program with a focus on Maternal Health. This program is designed to provide residents with a comprehensive education in both Internal Medicine and Preventive Medicine, preparing them for a career in primary care and women's health.


Program Structure

The IM-PM residency program is a 4-year program that includes 30 months of Internal Medicine training, 18 months of Preventive Medicine training, and 3 years of working towards an MPH degree in Rutgers School of Public Health. The program is designed to provide residents with a strong foundation in clinical medicine, as well as the skills and knowledge needed to address the social and environmental determinants of health.


Curriculum

The curriculum for the IM-PM residency program includes a combination of clinical rotations, didactic sessions, and research experiences. Residents will participate in Preventive Medicine seminars and community-based projects, and will have the opportunity to work with faculty mentors on research projects.


  • The PGY-I year includes 6+2 blocks of Internal Medicine training, as well as 8 weeks of Preventive Medicine training.
  • The PGY-II year includes 6 months of Internal Medicine training and 6 months of Preventive Medicine training, as well as coursework in the School of Public Health.
  • The PGY-III year includes 6 months of Internal Medicine training and 6 months of Preventive Medicine training, as well as continued coursework in the School of Public Health.
  • The PGY-IV year includes 8 months of Internal Medicine training and 4 months of Preventive Medicine training, as well as completion of the MPH degree and capstone project.

Research

The IM-PM residency program includes a strong research component, with residents working on research projects throughout their training. The program has partnerships with community organizations and faculty mentors, providing residents with opportunities to work on projects that address the social and environmental determinants of health.


Application Process

The application process for the IM-PM residency program includes submission of an application through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS), as well as an interview with the program directors.


  • Applications are accepted only through ERAS.
  • The program accepts 1-2 residents per year.
  • International Medical Graduates must be ECFMG certified to be considered for a position.
  • The program does not sponsor H1B visas.
  • Clinical US experience is preferred, but not mandatory.
  • There is no cutoff score for USMLE Step 1 and 2 exam results.
  • USMLE Step 3 is not required to apply to the program.
  • Research experience is not required.
  • The application deadline is December 31.
