School Transportation Supervisor Certification Program

The School Transportation Supervisor Certification Program is a cooperative effort between Rutgers Center for Government Services and the School Transportation Supervisors of New Jersey. This certificate program is designed to meet the professional and educational needs of school district transportation supervisors, bus contractors, and those interested in enhancing their knowledge in these areas.

Program Overview

The program consists of eight core courses, which are mandatory training for New Jersey School Transportation Supervisors. The courses cover various aspects of school transportation, including management and supervisory skills, transporting students with disabilities, codes, statutes, and regulations, employee training and safety education, emergency management, financial operations, routing and scheduling, and fleet management.

Course Catalog

The following courses are part of the program:

• Codes, Statutes and Regulations: This course discusses the regulatory codes, statutes, and rules that govern the school transportation department's operations.
  • Credit/CEU/Hours: 15 hours
• Emergency Management: This course explains emergency management on all levels, including district, municipal, and state responsibilities.
  • Credit/CEU/Hours: 12 hours
• Employee Training and Safety Education: This course discusses the development of effective school bus driver and student training programs.
  • Credit/CEU/Hours: 21 hours
• Financial Operations: This course covers the financial components related to school transportation.
  • Credit/CEU/Hours: 18 hours
• Fleet Management: This course discusses the various components of overseeing the Transportation Maintenance Department.
  • Credit/CEU/Hours: 15 hours
• Management and Supervisory Skills: This course covers the roles, responsibilities, and relationships of a manager with staff, other departments, and administrators.
  • Credit/CEU/Hours: 27 hours
• Routing and Scheduling: This course teaches the aspects of safely developing bus routes and criteria for establishing bus stops.
  • Credit/CEU/Hours: 18 hours
• Transporting Students with Disabilities: This course requires special knowledge and skills, covering related laws and regulations, understanding the Individual Education Program (IEP), and strategies for effective communication and behavioral management.
