Hematology & Medical Oncology Fellowship Program
Program Overview
Introduction to the Hematology & Medical Oncology Fellowship Program
The University of Utah Hematology & Medical Oncology Fellowship Program is designed to produce leaders in the field of hematology and oncology. The program's mission is to train clinically competent hematologists and oncologists with the goal of producing leaders in basic science research, clinical research, and clinical care.
Program Overview
The program offers a three-year, dual board eligibility curriculum for the majority of its fellows. Additionally, fellows can choose to stay for more basic science research time, typically a year, or opt for a clinically heavy, two-year, single board eligibility fellowship.
Faculty and Research Opportunities
The program's faculty are recognized experts in oncology, benign and malignant hematology, providing many and varied opportunities for fellows to participate in laboratory, translational, and clinical research. This includes phase I clinical trials, investigator-initiated trials, and quality improvement research.
Primary Site and Clinical Experience
The primary site for the program is the Huntsman Cancer Institute, an NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center that serves as the primary cancer center of the Mountain West region. Fellows also rotate and have continuity clinics at the George E. Wahlen Veterans Affairs Medical Center, located next to the University of Utah Health center.
Program Structure and Fellow Selection
The program will match six fellows per year, for a full complement average of 18 fellows. The program is looking for self-motivated, compassionate, intellectually curious, and skilled clinicians that bring an array of interests and talents.
Program Director
The program is directed by Weldon Gilcrease III, MD, Associate Professor of Medicine and Fellowship Program Director.
