Overview
The International Studies major is an open major, meaning that students do not have to apply or take any prerequisites to declare. To declare a major in International Studies, students are required to meet with an advisor.
Major Requirements
The major requirements for International Studies include:
- One Peoples core course:
- ANTH 1010: Culture and the Human Experience
- HIST 1220: Asian History since 1500
- HIST 1310: Latin American History since the 1820s
- HIST 1510: World History since 1500
- PHIL 1003: Intro to Human Nature
- WLC 2020: Language in Society
- One Challenges core course:
- ENV 2100: Environment & Society
- GEOG 1400: Human Geography
- HIST 2200: The World since 1945
- PHIL 1001: Ethical Dilemmas
- One Systems core course:
- MKTG 2900: International Business
- ECON 2020: Macroeconomics
- GEOG 1300: World Regional Geography
- POLS 2100: Intro to International Relations
- POLS 2200: Intro to Comparative Politics
- IAS Core curriculum: Foundations
- INTL 3000 Foundations of International Studies
- Lower Division Language or Methods (BA or BS Requirements):
- Bachelor of Arts: Complete 16 credits of foreign language courses 1010, 1020, 2010, 2020 in one language.
- Bachelor of Science: Complete 2 methods courses from the approved course list
- Upper Division Language or Culture Focus (BA or BS Requirements):
- Bachelor of Arts: Complete 6 credits of upper division language in your target language
- Bachelor of Science: Complete 9 credits of upper division culture electives from the approved course list
- Upper Division Thematic Focus (BA and BS Requirements):
- Bachelor of Arts: Earn 12 credits of upper-division courses from a selected focus
- Bachelor of Science: Earn 18 credits of upper-division courses from a selected focus
- Signature Experience:
- Complete 3 credits through a relevant study abroad program, internship, research course, community-engaged learning course, or an honors thesis. The selection must be pre-approved by an IAS advisor.
- IAS Core Curriculum: Capstone
- INTL 5000 Capstone for International Studies
Notes
- No more than 3 credits from a Hinckley internship may count toward your focus electives and focus electives must come from a minimum of three departments.
- Grade Requirements: All major courses must be taken for a minimum letter grade of C or better.
Transfer Students
- Major Requirements: 51 to 52 Credits
- International Studies/Diplomacy courses totaling 51 (BS) to 52 (BA) credits must be completed successfully, including the signature experience.
- A portion of these courses may be completed through transfer credit from Salt Lake Community College or another university within the state of Utah.
- Transfer students from out-of-state institutions should meet with an academic advisor to review their transfer coursework and discuss how these apply to the major requirements.
