Clinical Medical Assistant Program
The Clinical Medical Assistant Program prepares students to advance their careers as effective medical assistants in a clinical setting. This program is presented in a hybrid format, with an online and self-paced curriculum, and monthly in-person skill labs to practice and reinforce learning. At the end of the program, students participate in 180 hours of clinical training.

What do Medical Assistants do?
Within the large and growing healthcare industry, medical assistants play a key role in keeping a healthcare facility running smoothly. They perform general patient care and handle routine administrative responsibilities that frequently include:
- Obtaining patient vital signs
- Taking measurements
- Administering oral and parenteral medications
- Performing wound care
- Assisting during procedures
- Labeling and processing specimens
- Preparing for, performing, and monitoring EKG
- Managing medical records
- Processing Health Insurance
What are in-person skill labs?
This portion of the program provides hands-on learning and practice. Experienced instructors guide students through each learning objective. Students sign up for at least one three-hour skill lab per month, which are required to advance through the program and are offered on various days and times each month.
Students must attend and pass each of the following classes:
- MA Program Orientation
- Foundational Skills
- Patient Care Basics
- EKG and Rapid Response
- Clinical Procedures
- Blood Draw and POC
- Medical Administration
- Final Simulation

Schedule
The Medical Assisting program includes 265 hours of curriculum, approximately 24 hours of in-person labs, and 180 hours of clinical training (externship). Students are allowed up to one year to complete everything. Those who dedicate at least 12 hours of study/class time per week can complete the program in nine months. Some students can complete their training in as little as six months with dedicated study habits of over 25 hours per week.
Tuition
Full Certificate Tuition - $3,200
- Tuition is due upon acceptance and registration.
- This noncredit certificate program is not eligible for federal financial aid.
- University of Utah employee tuition reduction benefits do not apply to this program.
Location
This program includes online curriculum and monthly in-person labs located in downtown Salt Lake City.
Requirements
- In order to be admitted, applicants must be at least 18 years of age and have a high school diploma or a General Education Development Certificate (GED).
- Applicants must have professional working proficiency in English.
- No healthcare skills or experience are considered prerequisites for entry into the training program.
- Students must take and pass a criminal background check and an 11-panel drug screening.
- Students must present documentation of required immunizations prior to their clinical training experience.
