Program Overview

The Metalsmithing I program is a Lifelong Learning course offered by the University of Utah. This course explores the fundamentals of metalsmithing, introducing students to the basic tools and techniques used in the craft.

Course Description

Students will learn about the properties of different metals and experience annealing, sawing, soldering, and finishing skills. The course culminates in the creation of a simple ring or pendant in the metal of the student's choice. All levels are welcome, and no prior experience is required. Students can expect to spend an additional $20-$50 on materials during the course.

Class Sections

The course is offered in two sections:

• Spring 2026 Section 1: Starting on January 14, 2026, and meeting on Wednesdays from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm at Salt City Smithery (3450 S Main St, Unit 44W, South Salt Lake). The tuition fee is $249.00, with a special fee of $80.00 for tool rental and supplies, totaling $329.00. The instructor is Nikolas Kienitz. This section is currently full.
• Spring 2026 Section 2: Starting on February 23, 2026, and meeting on Mondays from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm at Salt City Smithery (3450 S Main St, Unit 44W, South Salt Lake). The tuition fee is $249.00, with a special fee of $80.00 for tool rental and supplies, totaling $329.00. The instructor is Amy Schmidt. Registration for this class will close on February 22, 2026, at midnight.

Eligibility

Lifelong Learning classes are open to anyone 18 years or older. There is no requirement to be a matriculated University of Utah student, current student, or staff member. Exceptions for individuals aged 15 and above may be considered upon request.
