Introduction to the 3 Year BSN Transfer Program

The 3-Year BSN Transfer program at the University of Virginia is designed for students transferring from other colleges or universities, or from other schools or colleges within UVA, who want to earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) in three years. This program is designed for students who have completed college-level coursework but have not previously earned a bachelor's degree.

Program Overview

Through six semesters of full-time study and a 120-credit curriculum that begins the fall after students earn admission to the program, students are prepared to sit for the NCLEX exam upon graduation. During the program, students get hands-on clinical experience beginning in their second year, enjoy close proximity to world-class professors and preceptors, take part in self-care and resilience retreats organized by the School’s signature Compassionate Care Initiative, and engage in UVA’s unique interprofessional approach that regularly brings nursing and medical students together.

Important Dates

Application for the 3-Year Transfer BSN program opens August 1
Application deadline for students transferring from within UVA: February 1
Application deadline for students transferring from another college or university: March 1
Notification of admissions decisions: typically May 1

Who Should Apply

The School of Nursing accepts transfer students into the second year of our program for three subsequent years of full-time study. Transfer students enter as second-year students the fall after earning admission and complete the BSN in three additional years of study.
An accelerated transfer program is also available for students who wish to earn a BSN in two years (includes courses during the summers and January term)
Working RNs interested in earning a BSN can apply to the part-time RN to BSN program
Students who have already completed a bachelor's degree in another field are ineligible to apply as second-year transfers but may have interest in the Clinical Nurse Leader program, which is for non-nurses interested in entering the profession on a fast track

Admission Requirements for External Applicants

For external applicants, you must be in good social and academic standing at the institution or institutions you have attended, have completed at least 30 credits of college-level work by the end of your spring semester, and must submit a completed application by the March 1 deadline.
All applicants must successfully complete the following four prerequisite courses with a grade of a C or better prior to beginning our program in the fall semester:
- Microbiology (3-4 credits)
- Chemistry (3-4 credits)
- Human anatomy and physiology I (4 credits)
- Human anatomy and physiology II (4 credits)
- Growth and development across the lifespan (3 credits)
- College composition (3-6 credits)
