Program Overview


Introduction to the 2 Year Accelerated BSN Transfer Program

The 2 Year Accelerated BSN Transfer Program at the University of Virginia is designed for students who have completed the equivalent of two years of college-level coursework and have not earned a bachelor's degree. This program is a challenging, dynamic, and powerful option that can be completed in two years of full-time study, including two summer sessions.


Program Overview

  • The program is designed to be completed in two years of full-time study, including two summer sessions.
  • Students earn 120 credits, gain a wealth of clinical experience and clinical rotation hours, and receive ample preparation and eligibility to take the NCLEX exam.
  • The program begins in May, and students work towards completing their degree in an efficient, structured timeline as members of a close-knit, intimate cohort and community.

  • Notification of admissions decisions: December 1
  • ABSN program begins: Summer session

Admission Requirements for External Applicants

  • Submit a completed application by October 1
  • Pay the application fee or apply for a fee waiver
  • Have successfully completed 52 general education credits, including prerequisite requirements, by the end of the spring semester prior to enrollment
  • Submit official transcripts from all universities/colleges attended to the UVA Office of Undergraduate Admission
  • Successful completion of prerequisite courses with a grade of C or better prior to beginning the program in the summer semester, including:
    • Microbiology (3-4 credits)
    • Chemistry (3-4 credits)
    • Human anatomy and physiology I with lab (4 credits)
    • Human anatomy and physiology II with lab (4 credits)
    • Lifespan development/Developmental psychology (3 credits)
    • College composition (3-6 credits)
    • At least 9 credits of humanities/fine arts
    • At least 9 credits of social science/history
    • At least 9-11 credits of general education coursework

Admission Requirements for Internal Applicants

  • Current students from another school or college within UVA who are hoping to transfer into the School of Nursing and work towards a BSN
  • Current first-year traditional BSN students who are already in the School of Nursing and hope to graduate early with their BSN
  • Internal applicants may be asked to submit midterm reports or recommendation letters if they are in their first semester at UVA
  • Application requirements:
    • Submit completed internal application by October 1 deadline (no application fee)
    • Have successfully completed 52 general education credits, including prerequisite requirements, by the end of the spring semester prior to enrollment
    • Submit official transcripts from all universities/colleges attended to the UVA Office of Undergraduate Admission
    • Internal UVA applicants enrolled in other schools or colleges who wish to transfer into the School of Nursing should be prepared to upload unofficial transcripts, a two-page personal statement, and their resume
    • Successful completion of prerequisite courses with a grade of C or better prior to beginning the program in the summer semester
