Program Overview
Program Overview
The UVA Prehospital Education Program is accredited by the Virginia Office of EMS and affiliated with UVA Health. This program offers initial NREMT certification in Advanced EMT.
Admission Requirements
To apply for the course, applicants must:
- Hold a current Virginia EMT and CPR card
- Be 18 years of age
- Have completed high school diploma or obtained GED
- Not have been convicted or found guilty of any crime, offense, or regulatory violation
- Be associated with a Virginia Fire or Rescue Agency and in good standing
- Have received recommendations from primary agency Chief/Captain and Training Officer
Program Details
- The program meets the national educational standards for certification as a National Registry Advanced EMT
- The program uses clinical and field-based competencies to determine a student’s readiness for testing and certification
- All students will be required to successfully complete the course with a minimum 80% before being eligible for testing
- In-hospital clinicals will only be completed within UVA Health
- Field Internship time will be completed at any agency with a field internship agreement
Course Structure
- The course will run from January 22, 2026, to May 14, 2026
- Classes and labs will meet every Thursday from 8a-4p
- ED Clinicals will be scheduled using sign-up genius
- A significant portion of the class will be completed online using the JBL learning platform
- Platinum Planner will be used to manage competencies
Tuition and Fees
- Tuition: $1,705
- This fee helps cover administrative costs, instructors, supplies, program polo shirt, mock practical, and the Terminal Competency Psychomotor Exam (TCPE)
- The Cognitive Exam is at the student's own cost
- Fees can be invoiced to a sponsoring agency
- Accepted payment methods: checks, credit cards, debt cards, or money orders
Additional Costs
- Textbook: AAOS, Advanced Emergency Care and Transportation of the Sick and Injured, 4th Ed. (online platform included)
- Platinum Planner (online competency management software + testing)
- Stethoscope, blue/black pants, black shoes, immunizations (not included)
- School Polo will be supplied (included)
- AEMT Cognitive Exam Fee: $159 per attempt (as of 7/1/24, not included)
- Parking (not included)
Application Process
- Applicants must complete the application process by emailing the required documents, including ICS, CPR card, and application
- A pretest must be completed in order to proceed with the application process
- There will be a waiting list; students placed on the waiting list will be notified of status change via email and phone no later than one week before the start of class
Clinical Rotations
- UVA Emergency Department: 24 hours
- UVA Pediatric Emergency Department: 12 hours
- Field Internship (only in agencies with contracts): 72 hours (variable)
