Introduction to the Doctor of Medicine (MD) Program

The Doctor of Medicine (MD) program is designed to provide students with a comprehensive education in the field of medicine. The program is divided into four phases, each with its own unique set of courses and experiences.


Phase 1: Foundations of Medicine (18 months)

The first phase of the program, Foundations of Medicine, is 18 months long and provides students with a solid foundation in the principles of medicine. This phase includes:


  • A week-long shadowing experience, known as "Week on the Wards"
  • A four-month study of healthy human physiology, known as "Healthy Human"
  • Clinical skills training, which includes meeting twice a week with a small group and small group leader
  • Small group discussions about professionalism, ethics, communication, cultural competency, and other "How to be a Doctor" skills
  • A longitudinal experience in an outpatient clinic, where students see patients and learn from a healthcare team
  • Study of human disease in organ systems-based blocks
  • Anatomy lab, which includes the use of computers to display cross-sectional imaging, study guides, lecture notes, and other electronic references
  • Community Learning and Social Medicine, a required course that includes 12 months of community engagement and 18 months of social medicine curricular work

Phase 2: Application of Medical Sciences (12 months)

The second phase of the program, Application of Medical Sciences, is 12 months long and provides students with core knowledge of the basic clinical medical and surgical fields. This phase includes:


  • Required rotations in Surgery, Medicine, Pediatrics, Psychiatry, Neurology, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Radiology, Primary Care, Dermatology, Ophthalmology, Palliative Care, and Anesthesiology
  • Clinical experiences at Emory and Emory-affiliated healthcare facilities throughout the Atlanta area, including:
    • Grady Memorial Hospital
    • Emory University Hospital
    • Emory University Hospital Midtown
    • Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston
    • Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Hughes Spalding
    • Wesley Woods Center and Geriatric Care Hospital
    • Atlanta Veterans Affairs Medical Center
    • The Emory Clinic (multiple sites around Atlanta)
    • Multiple non-Emory primary clinical sites in and around Atlanta
  • Regular meetings with a small group to further develop professional identity and process and reflect on clinical experiences

Phase 3: Discovery (5 months)

The third phase of the program, Discovery, is a structured time for students to conduct a hypothesis-driven research project under the direction of a faculty member. This phase includes:


  • A research project that must be a scientific inquiry based in Medicine, but can also combine interests in other areas, such as creative writing, public health, community development, education, or health policy
  • The opportunity to include an international experience in the Discovery project
  • Full-time work on the project with no other commitments except occasional seminars or workshops relevant to the research
  • The opportunity to publish the Discovery work in peer-reviewed scientific journals and present the project at Medical Student Research Day in the fourth year

Phase 4: Translation of Medical Sciences (9 months)

The fourth and final phase of the program, Translation of Medical Sciences, is 9 months long and prepares students for the transition to physician. This phase includes:


  • Required senior rotations in Emergency Medicine, Critical Care Medicine (ICU), and a sub-internship in Surgery, Medicine, or Pediatrics
  • Sufficient time for electives or away-rotations during the year
  • A required month-long Capstone course that offers carefully designed lectures, workshops, panel discussions, and exercises to equip students with the practical skills and information necessary for success as residents
